在合同用语中，表示“假如、假设、如果”的词汇，除最基本的 if 外，据笔者考证，还有 if and whenever，in the event that/of，where，should，in case（of），insofar as，in so far as，on（the）condition that等。

接下来我们结合实例来看一下这些表达各自在实际文本中用法。

实例1：

If any member shall surrender for cancellation a share certificate representing shares held by him and request the Company to issue in lieu two or more share certificates representing such shares in such proportions as he may specify, the Board may, if it thinks fit, comply with such request subject to the payment of such sum (not exceeding, in the case of any share capital listed on a stock exchange in Hong Kong, the maximum amount prescribed or permitted from time to time by such stock exchange, and, in the case of any other share capital, such sum in such currency as the Board may from time to time determine to be reasonable in the territory in which the relevant register is situate

如果任一股东交出代表其所持股份之一张股票予以注销，并要求本公司按该股东可能指定之有关比例另发两张或以上代表该等股份之股票替代，则董事会可于就首张股票以外每张股票支付董事会不时釐定的有关费用（若为任何于香港证券交易所上市的股本，则该费用不得超过有关证券交易所不时规定或准许的最高金额，而若为任何其他股本，则为董事会就有关股东名册所在地区而言属合理而可能不时釐定的以有关货币计值的有关款项，

实例2：

假如登记涉及获授权为讯息签署人的职员，申请人便须知会有关职员带同其香港身份证及數码证书到登记中心，以便登记中心发出道路货物资料系统的用户帐户。

实例3：

In the case of Objections relating to the Second Stage Announcement, by the end of the Second Stage Objection Period (being seven (7) days commencing on the day after the Second Stage Announcements).

如果反对与第二阶段公布有关，则应在第二阶段反对期完结前（在第二阶段公布之日后的七 （7）日内）收妥。

实例4：

Nevertheless, this situation could change, in so far as awareness increases of the risks to growth, fiscal reforms are put in place and saving rates begin to rise.

但是，只要人们日益意识到增长面临的风险，进行财政改革，开始增加储蓄，那么这种情况可能会改变。

实例5：

The delegation stated that Syria guaranteed the right to freedom of expression, opinion and belief, and that limitations were imposed only insofar as the exercise of these rights interfered with the rights of others, especially through libel or insult.

该国代表团指出叙利亚保障人们享有言论、意见和信仰自由权，目前所实施的限制只是因为有人在行使这些权利时侵犯了别人的权利，尤其是对他人进行诽谤或羞辱。

实例6：

In the event that the New Permit is revoked, cancelled, terminated or modified to the effect to preclude the CITIC Group from engaging in the Proposed Capacity Transactions during the Agreement Term, the Renewed Transponder Master Agreement will be terminated.

若新许可证被撤回、取消、终止或修订，导致中信集团于协议期限内无法进行拟议的容量交易，则已续期的转发器主协议将予以终止。
