一些专利文献中经常出现“倍数”的相关表达，比如谁比谁多了多少倍，谁是谁的多少倍等。汉语常见的表达如：增加了几倍、增加到几倍、减少了几分之几、减少到几分之几等。英语相对汉语来说，表达比较多样化。

 

我们知道英文中“增加了”英文表达为increase by，“增加到”是increase to；“减少了”是decrease by，“减少到”是increase to。常见的英语表达可参考如下:

(一)倍数增加

英语常用来表示倍数增加的方式及译法有以下4种:

①increase by times:“增加了n-1倍”或“增加到n倍”

②increase n times:“增加了n-1倍”或“增加到n倍”

③increase by a factor of n:“增加了n-1倍”或“增加到n倍

④increase to n times:“增加到n倍”或“增加了n-1倍”

 

(二)倍数减少

英语常用的倍数减少表达法及译法有以下5种:

①decrease by 3 times:“减少了2/3”或“减至1/3”

②decrease to 3 times:“减至2/3”或“减少了1/3”

③decrease by a factor of 3 times:“减少了2/3”或“减至1/3”

④decrease 3 times;“减至1/3”或“减少了2/3”

⑤times less than;“减少了3/4”或“减至1/4”

 

需要注意的是，虽然英语表达倍数减少是“减少多少倍”，但是汉语中一般不会说“减少多少倍”，汉语中一般说“减少了几分之几”或“减少到几分之几”。

 

(三)倍数比较

 

英语常用的倍数比较法及译法有下列4种：

 

①A is n times larger than B:“A是B的n倍”或“A比B大n-1倍”

②A is n times as large as B:“A相当于B的n倍”或“A比B大n-1倍”

③A is larger than B by n times;“A是B的n倍

④A is n times B:“A是B的n倍”

 

如：

 

[例句]The yield of the parts has been more than trebled or quadruple.

[译文]零件的合格率已提高了3倍或4倍多。

[评述]在英语中，double表示增加1倍，treble表示增加2倍，quadruple表示增加3倍。英语在表述比较倍数时，除了不含倍数词的again句型外，都包括基础倍数，应译为“净增n-1倍”，而不是“净增n倍”。

[改译]零件合格率提高了2-3倍多。

 

除上述提到的常见表达外，“数字+fold+名词increase/reduction”也用来表示倍数增加/减少，如

 

There is at least a 2-fold increase in bandwidth and carrier power.

带宽和载波功率至少增加了一倍。

 

The principal advantage of the new machine over old-fashion machine is 4-fold reduction in weight.

与旧式机器相比,新式机器的主要优点是重量减少了四分之三。
