在专利文献中，but作为连词常见的用法有两种:

第一种：表示转折的并列连词，相当于on the contrary，on the other hand，翻译时可译为“但是”、“可是”等;

The first approach utilizes a mechanical system for data storage, but the second approach relies on electromagnetic fields.

第一种方法利用机械系统进行数据存储，但第二种方法依赖于电磁场。

第二种：与表示否定的词连用，表示without the concomitant that，通常翻译为“不过”、“只是”、“而是”等。

如

It should be mentioned that the aperture opening is not just formed by the frame of the shielding element, but already exists, for example, in a rear wall, a housing or a plug holder.

值得一提的是，孔径开口不仅由屏蔽元件的框架构成，(而)也存在于后盖板、外壳或插座中。

Energy is nothing but the capacity to do work.

能量不是别的，只是作功的能力。

此外，but也常作为介词使用，表示“with the exception of”、“other than”，翻译为“除了...以外”等。所以，不能每次遇到but就要简单地译为“但是”

In the preferred embodiment the base plate is furthermore flush with the outer bottom surface area of the housing, but is covered on the inside by a film of plastic so that the base plate is ultimately inset in the bottom wall of the housing body.

在最佳实施例中，除了基板内侧覆盖有一层塑料膜外，基板还和壳体的外底面平齐，这样基板最终可以插入壳体的底壁中。
