render一词在《元照英美法词典》中有4层含义：

 

(1)作出(判决、裁决)；判处

(2)表示；汇报；开出(账单等)；呈报；提供；提出(理由)；呈递

(3)履行；实行；实施；执行

(4)放弃；让与；给；给付；纳贡

 

翻译时，不能照搬词典，需要我们灵活处理，可以分为以下几种情况：

 

(1) 作出

These included the following observations: that since the Rules provide not only for arbitration but for negotiation and facilitated settlement as well, care should be taken not to render those aspects of the Rules inapplicable, particularly where the vast majority of cases are disposed of at the stages prior to arbitration;

会上提出的意见包 括：由于《规则》不仅对仲裁作出规定，而且也对谈判和协助下调解 作 出规 定 ，应当注意不使《规则》的这些方面无法适用，特别是如果绝大多数案件是 在仲裁前的阶段处理的话；

 

The United Nations Appeals Tribunal shall, under conditions prescribed in its statute and rules, exercise appellate jurisdiction over an appeal of a judgement rendered by the United Nations Dispute Tribunal submitted by either party.

联合国上诉法庭应根据其规约和规则所定条件，对任何一方对联合国争议法庭所作判决提出的上诉行使上诉管辖权。

 

(2) 提供

In case policy bureaux put forward proposals on buying back assets, the Treasury Branch will render necessary assistance.

如有關政策局提出回購資產建議，庫務科會加以協助。

 

合同中，render常与performance并用，构成render performance (含义等同于 perform)表示“履行义务”，如：

 

Where the parties prescribed liquidated damages for delayed performance, the breaching party shall, in addition to payment of the liquidated damages, render performance.

当事人就迟延履行约定违约金的，违约方支付违约金后，还应当履行债务。

 

Wurth may exercise its legal rights of set-off and retention as well as the right to refuse performance in accordance with the PRC laws if the supplier fails to render the agreed consideration.  

如果供应商未提供约定的对价的内容，伍尔特有权根据中国法律的规定行使法定抵销权和保留权，并且有权拒绝履行合同义务。

 

(3) 实施

鉴于提出的上述意见，工作组请伊拉克政府直接释放Husayn 女士，让她与 其孩儿团圆，并确保公平和独立的审理，使她的境况符合《公民权利和政治权利 国际公约》和《世界人权宣言》确立的标准和原则。

 

render在合同中还经常表示“使得”，让英文表达显得更加地道。如：

 

To carry on any other business which may seem to the Company capable of being conveniently carried on in connection with the business of the Company or calculated directly or indirectly to enhance the value of, or render profitable, any of the Company’s properties or rights.

進行本公司認為就本公司業務而言可能便於進行、或直接或間接有利於提升本公司任何財產 或權利的價值或使其有利可圖的任何其他業務。

Except as provided in subparagraph (a) of this recommendation, an incorrect or insufficient statement of the information required to be entered in the registry record under the law and the regulations does not render the registration ineffective, unless it seriously misleads a reasonable searcher.
