体现法律英语文体特点的，首先是法律文件偏爱“正式的”词语——与普通语言不一样的词语。正式词语在各类法律文件中随处可见。

例如，在合同中，不用before而用prior，不用after而用subsequent，不用but而用provided that，在这几个例子中，常用词都被正式的词取代。其他的正式用语还有：construe，deem，operate，same，object to，whereas，without，prejudice等等。如：

1.Prior to the commencement of services hereunder, the Contractor shall furnish Party B with Certificates of Insurance (or evidence of self-insurance) for all insurance required herein. Each insurer must be reasonably acceptable to Party B, and possess a minimum Best's rating of 'AVII' (or equivalent rating agency in the country) and licensed to conduct business in all states/countries where this Agreement shall apply.

本合同构成双方之间完整的协议。本合同的任何修改仅可以书面形式做出，且仅在本合同签署日后由双方签署后方为有效。

3.If any term or provision of this Agreement shall become or be declared illegal, invalid or unenforceable for any reason whatsoever, such term or provision shall be severed from this Agreement and shall be deemed to be deleted from this Agreement; provided that if such deletion materially affects or alters the basis of this Agreement, the parties shall negotiate in good faith to amend and modify the provisions and terms of this Agreement as may be necessary or desirable in the circumstances.

如果因任何原因本协议的任一条款或规定变为或被宣布为不合法、无效或不可执行，该条款或规定须与本协议分离，且被视为从本协议中删除，但如果删除该条款或规定会实质性影响或改变本协议的基础，双方应以诚信的态度进行谈判，以期在必要或可取的情况下对本协议的规定和条款进行修改和变更。

宣誓书（affividat）的正式用语有being first duly sworn，depose and says; before me，a notary public。而判决书则用Now therefore，It is ordered，adjudged，and decreed做出判决。如：

I, the undersigned, being first duly sworn, depose and say that I am the person referred to in the foregoing application and supporting documents. I have carefully read the questions in the foregoing application and have answered them completely, without reservations of any kind.

本人，以下签名人，谨此宣誓并作出如下声明：我是上述申请和证明文件中提及的人。我已经仔细阅读了上述申请中的问题，并完整回答了该等问题，且毫无保留。
