law在英语中既可以表示“法律”也可以表示“法”；在法律文件中经常以law，laws，a law三种形式出现。其中the law通常表示抽象的，广义的“法”；a law或者laws表示具体的，狭义的法。

例 A reference to any law, regulation or rule includes all laws, regulations, or rules amending, consolidating or replacing them, and a reference to a law includes all regulations and rules under that law;

【参考译文】凡反提到的任何法律、法规或条例，包括修正、合并或替代该等法律、法规或条例的一切法律、法规或条例，凡提到的某一法律，包括根据该法律项下的一切法规和条例；

例 This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New York (USA), without regard to the conflict of laws provisions thereof. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods shall not apply to this Agreement.

英语合同中经常遇到at law or in equity，一些译文处理为“法律和衡平法”，个人感觉此种翻译有失偏颇。法律和衡平法并不是并列的关系而是包含关系。在《元照英美法词典》中，law的第三种解释为“普通法”，common law的缩写，个人感觉，此时译为：普通法和衡平法并列会更好。

例 Without limiting any right or remedy available to the non-defaulting party at law or in equity, upon the termination of this Agreement in accordance with Articles X, the defaulting party shall indemnify the other party for all damages, costs, charges and expenses suffered or incurred by it in connection with the termination due to the negligence, breach of duty or other default or wrongdoing of the defaulting party, its servants, employees, agents or contractors.

law也可以作形容词，表示“法；法的”。用作形容词，有时其含义与“legal”同，但也有一些固定用法和区别：legal还有“合法的；法律准许的；不被法律禁止的”含义，也一些固定搭配，如法律事务所是law firm而不是legal firm；法律原则是legal doctrine而不是law doctrine。
