violate常见的含义有“侵犯、妨碍”和“违法、违反”，其还可以译为“侵犯”，如“侵犯隐私”即“violate one’s privacy”。

例 The execution and performance of this Agreement by the JVC will not violate any other contract or obligation of the JVC or any currently effective law, regulation, decree, order or judgment of any court or governmental agency.

violate的名词形式为“violation”，除了具有其动词形式的各种意思外，在美国刑法中还表示“违警罪、违警行为”，指的是违反公共福利事业的违法行为，和一般意义上所说的犯罪(crime) 是不同的。另外，violation也是强奸(rape)这个词的比较委婉的 说法，如“violation of woman”。

例 If any of the provisions of this Agreement is held invalid or unenforceable and unless the invalidity or unenforceability thereof does substantial violation to the underlying intent \- and sense of the remainder of this Agreement, such invalidity or unenforceability shall not affect in any way the validity and enforceability of any other provisions of this Agreement except those which the invalidated or unenforceable provisions comprise an integral part of or are otherwise clearly inseparable from.
