When You are Old
By William Butler Yeats
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look,
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep.
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true.
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled.
And paced upon the mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
神色柔和,眼波中倒影深深;
爱你渐衰的脸上愁苦的风霜;

The artistic conception of poetry is the key to translation. Both of the versions reappear the original sentimental feelings. But from the details, perhaps due to women's unique delicacy and tenderness, Bing Xin's translation is more tender. Compared with Fu Hao's translation, Bing Xin's is closer to the fresh and natural style of the original poem. There are many “and” in this poem. Bing Xin uses a similar expression in her translation, such as “取下这本书来”、“你弯下了腰”。Although the structure of Fu Hao’s translation is neat, it is a bit strange to read. By contrast, Bing Xin's translation is more in line with the habits of Chinese readers. Fu Hao is superior in the translation of the last stanza of the poem. He translates the word “lover” into“爱神”, which makes the imagery of the poem more vivid. It is obvious that the two translators have very different styles. Fu Hao chooses gorgeous rhetoric words with beautiful literary atmosphere and strong exotic flavor between the lines, which makes people intoxicated. But Bing Xin chooses the light, bright, slant colloquial words, also has no deviation to the original poem sentiment expression. These differences can be seen from the translation of the title. Fu Hao’s translation is“当你年老时”and Bing Xin’s is“当你老了”. We can see that the former is soothing and peaceful, while the latter is lively, and smart.
