形容词和副词常见的翻译方法有三种：

 

第一种：用形容词和副词的延伸含义。

 

如

More than eight years have passed since Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping and I joined hands to establish full diplomatic relations between these between these two great nations.

自从邓小平副总理和我联手在我们两个伟大的国家之间建立了正式的外交关系以来，已经过去八年多了。

 

分析

full译为“正式的”，而不是“完整的；完全的”。

 

第二种：形容词和副词的互换。

 

如

When I finally succeed in making the letters correctly, I was flushed with childish pleasure and price.

 

第一步：断句。

When I finally succeed in making the letters correctly, /I was flushed with childish pleasure and price.

 

分析

这个主从复合句前面是一个时间状语从句，在这里要注意when的翻译之后，之后主句中的was flushed的理解则是更加重要。

 

第二步和第三步：翻译和重读

 

我终于把这几个字母写对了，这时我天真地感受到无限愉快和骄傲。

 

分析

1. 原句中succeeded和correctly这两个单词意思有所重复，可以认为是“同指”现象，在翻译时，只翻译一次就可以。

2. childish在文中并没有翻译为形容词，而是处理为副词“天真地”，同时pleasure and pride也变成形容词“高兴的和骄傲的”。这就是我们所知道的翻译中的“词性转换”，这是由于形容词和副词具有同一个词根。在翻译时，我们可以将两者互相转换。

 

第三种：长的形容词和副词可以单独成句。

 

In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way a great many words, among them...

 

第一步：断句

In the days that followed/ I learned to spell/ in this uncomprehending way/ a great many words, /among them...

 

分析

这是一个简单句，主谓清晰。难在in this uncomprehending way这个词组。

 

第二步和第三步：翻译和重读

 

在接下来的几天里，我就学着拼写，虽然并不能理解，但是却也能拼写出来很多单词，其中一些是...

 

分析

1. in the days that followed中followed是过去分词作定语。

2. in this uncomprehending way译为“虽然并不能理解”。
