legal在《牛津现代高级辞典》中的解释为：connected with, in accordance with, authorized or required by the law （法律上的,合法的，法律承认的，法律要求的，法定的。），强调“合乎国家正式颁布的法律的，或经法律许可的”。

例如：“诉讼过程”应译为the course of legal proceedings，即法定程序，所谓“法定”是指“合乎国家正式颁布的”，所以“法律行为”是legal act，“法定地址”是legal address，“法定代理人”是legal agent，：“司法协助”是legal assistance，“法人”是legal entity，“法律事务”是legal business，“法律效力”是legal effect，“法律效用”是legal effectiveness，“法定财产”是legal estate，等。

lawful：allowed by law；according to law（合法的，法定的），是强调“合理合法的” “合乎或不违反国家的法律、教会的戒律或道德的标准”，与“legal, legitimate”有差别。

例如：“合法行为”是lawful action，“合法政党”是lawful party，“合法财产”是lawful property，“合法席位”是lawful seat，“合法婚姻”是lawful wedlock，等。

legitimate：lawful, regular, reasonable，（合法的，正规的，合理的，可说明为正当的），是强调既是合法的，又是正当的，指根据法律、公认权威与准则为正当的。

例如：“合法防卫，正当防卫”是legitimate defence，“合法的自由，正当的自由”是legitimate freedom，“合法收入，正当收入”是legitimate income，“合法的宗教活动”是legitimate religious activities，等。

legal 侧重于法律的形式，lawful 侧重于法律的实质。如果说某一行为是 lawful，意指该行为为法律所授权或批准，至少是不禁止的 ；而说某一行为是 legal，则意味着该行为根据法律的形式或习惯，或者以技术性的方式作为，在程序上是符合法律要求的。（见《元照法律字典》legal 词条）

legitimate 指法律认可的合法性，并且还有“正统的”含义。如 a legitimate son，是“婚生子”，其反义词 an illegitimate son 便是“私生子”。同样，a legitimate government 为“合法政府”——这个合法并非一定按照法律程序或选举产生，可以是根据“惯例”或众人普遍认可的原则。所以该词还含有“合乎情理”的寓意，其“法律性”没有其他两词那么明显。例如，Most scientists believe it is legitimate to use animals in medical research. 可以译作“大多数科学家认为使用动物做医学研究是合情合理的”；如果译作“合法的”，那就错得很离谱。

此外，当 legal 作表语使用时，主要表示“合法的”的意思，如 Make sure that everything you do is strictly legal，而用作名词的修饰词或作定语使用时，则主要指 relating to the law，即与法律程序 / 知识有关，解读为“法律上的、属于法律范围的”，例如，legal advice，legal costs，legal system，例如 ：

 He is taking legal action against his company.

 It is a legal requirement for a person to carry a valid identity card in public place.
