兴奋剂在英语中称“Dope”或者“Doping”，兴奋剂事件则可表达为“Doping case”，兴奋剂原义为“供赛马使用的一种鸦片麻醉混合剂”。由于运动员为提高成绩而最早服用的药物大多属于兴奋剂药物刺激剂类，所以尽管后来被禁用的其他类型药物并不都具有兴奋性（如利尿剂），甚至有的还具有抑制性（如b-阻断剂），国际上对禁用药物仍习惯沿用兴奋剂的称谓。因此，如今通常所说的兴奋剂不再是单指那些起兴奋作用的药物，而实际上是对禁用药物的统称。

2020年新公布的兴奋剂品种共349种。常见兴奋剂如：刺激剂（irritant）、血液兴奋剂、EPO，即(促)红细胞生成素（erythrogenin）、利尿剂（diuretic）、麻醉止痛剂（narcotic analgesics）、苯丙胺类(冰毒)、苯丙胺类衍生物MDMA、MDA(摇头丸)、可卡因、咖啡因等药物。

兴奋剂和毒品不同，毒品既可以从广义上泛指可以对人体造成伤害的化学物质、毒物、毒剂，在日常生活中可以特指被人类当做嗜好品所滥用的功能性药物，多为精神药品或麻醉药品。因滥用这类药品会伤害身心健康，所以中文称之为毒品。

妨害兴奋剂管理罪，英文表达为是指引诱、教唆、欺骗运动员使用兴奋剂参加国内、国际重大体育竞赛，或者明知运动员参加上述竞赛而向其提供兴奋剂，情节严重的行为。

《刑法》第三百五十五条规定：
