查阅Cambridge Dictionary可知，“twice”有两种词性，一种是“adverb”，另一种是“predeterminer”，其中，“predeterminer”是指“前位限定词”。限定词是在名词词组中对名词中心词起特指、类指以及表示确定数量和非确定数量等限定作用的词类。按照限定词与限定词的相互搭配关系，限定词可分为前位限定词(pre-determinative）、中位限定词（central determinative）和后位限定词（post-determinative）。限定词的相互搭配关系为：前位+中位+后位。其中，前位限定词包括：all，both，half；double，twice，three times等；one-third，two-fifths等；what，such，（a / an）等。中位限定词包括：冠词（a/an，the），指示代词（this，that，these，those），形容性物主代词（my，your，his，her，our等），名词属格，不定代词（some，any，no，every，each，either，neither，enough等）。就“pay twice the penalty”来说，其中的谓语是“pay”，宾语是“penalty”，而“twice the”是对“penalty”的限定，其中“twice”是前位限定词，而“the”是中位限定词，所以“twice”放在“the”前面。需要注意的是，“double”与“twice”同义，都是指两倍，但是其具有的词性更多，包括adjective、noun、verb和predeterminer。由于“double”也可以作前位限定词，所以其与“twice”一样放在名词前面对限定作用，但是由于“double”涉及的词性更多，相关的表达方式也就更多，下面通过举例来说明：

债务人履行债务的，定金应当抵作价款或者收回。给付定金的一方不履行债务或者履行债务不符合约定，致使不能实现合同目的的，无权请求返还定金；收受定金的一方不履行债务或者履行债务不符合约定，致使不能实现合同目的的，应当双倍返还定金。

官方给出的英语译文为：

Where the debtor performs his/her obligations, the deposit shall be set off against the price or refunded. Where the party paying the deposit fails to perform its obligation or its obligation does not conform to the agreement, making it impossible to achieve the purpose of the contract, the party is not entitled to demand a refund of the deposit; where the party receiving the deposit fails to perform its obligation or its obligation does not conform to the agreement, making it impossible to achieve the purpose of the contract, it shall refund twice the amount of the deposit.

加黑部分译文使用的是“twice”，如果换作“double”，可以有以下几种形式：第一种和“twice”的用法一样，即“refund double the amount of the deposit”；其次是“double”作形容词，即“refund the double deposit”。
