某些副词如here，there和where在法律文件中往往当作前缀，与另一个或几个表示方位与原因指向的介词构成的复合副词等专门法律词汇用语，以表示加强和确定之含义。如hereunder(under it)，thereunder(under that)， under with(with what)，wherefore(why)，herein(in this document)，therein(in that clause)。

此类古英语及中古英语词的使用可以避免重复、误解或歧义，使语言精练直观，行文简练准确，可以显示法律行业的特殊性，故法律界人士对其有特殊的情结。

前缀here就是指本文件(法律、合同、条约等)，there指另外的文件，因此翻译这一类词的基本策略就是搞清其后缀词(即to，in，of等)的确切含义。比如，herein就是“本文件中”，hereunder就是“根据本文件、依本文件”，其余类推。

常有些平常不大用的词语或关联词在法律文件中有其特别的格式。如条约和合同的序言或前言部分，常有以Whereas开头的几段，称为“鉴于条款”，文件最后则用in witness of(以资证明)等语。
